Organization Description
Summary
Urban areas face significant challenges due to limited road space for public transport, which affects speed, punctuality and reliability. Conflicts with other road users and ongoing construction exacerbate these problems. Proposed solutions include optimising space through innovative management, intelligent infrastructure that uses real-time data to improve service reliability, and flexible operations that adapt routes and schedules to current conditions. Key areas of focus are urban mobility solutions, traffic management technologies, infrastructure innovation and user engagement to better understand passenger needs and inform effective policy changes.
Starting Point
The constraints of limited road space have a negative impact on the speed, punctuality and reliability of public transport services. Conflicts with other road users and ongoing road works, which further reduce space, move bus stops and cause delays, exacerbate the problem.
Working Hypothesis
Space Optimisation: By implementing innovative space management solutions, it is possible to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of public transport without requiring significant infrastructure changes.
Smart infrastructure: The integration of smart technologies and real-time data analysis can help reduce conflicts between public transport and other road users, leading to improved service reliability.
Flexible operations: Developing adaptive public transport systems that can dynamically adjust routes and schedules in response to real-time traffic conditions and construction activities will improve overall efficiency.
Subject areas
Urban mobility solutions: Exploring new models for urban transport that prioritise efficiency and accessibility.
Traffic Management Technologies: Investigating the role of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in optimising public transport operations and reducing conflicts with other users.
Infrastructure innovation: Identifying and testing alternative designs for bus stops and transit lanes that maximise the use of limited road space.
User engagement: Understanding passenger needs and preferences through surveys and data analysis to inform the development of user-centred solutions.
Policy and regulation: Analysing existing urban planning and transport policies to identify barriers and opportunities for implementing innovative public transport solutions.
About the Innovation Booster New Mobility Lab
The New Mobility Lab aims to solve mobility problems by promoting radical innovations from the Swiss market. With a strong network of research partners, including HSLU, ETH, HSG and other institutes, and the support of over 50 industry partners, the Lab strives to make mobility CO2-neutral and break through existing silos. The aim is to develop systemic solutions that offer added value to society. The Innovation Booster supports these ideas with agile and user centric tools methodically, and financially to turn these radical ideas into marketable products.
